The little human hearts are the experiences, the environment and the circumstances of Roy Steer, an eight year old boy and other characters in 1958-1959. He remembers but is unaware of the significance of adult-goings-on. His father, mother and teacher and the contentions between and among them affect and control his life. However, at year's end he becomes, on his own, acutely aware of one emotion: LOVE, from his 27 year old lovelorn, vulnerable teacher, Miss Cooper. There is no physical contact, just actions, memories, sensations, emotions, and now in this story, insights.
It is love in pantomime, thought and feeling between human beings in isolated, stimulating, beautiful settings where Roy is free: The Mendocino Coast, the Anderson Valley, redwood forests ("Redwoods make you crazy."), stimuli that are wonderments to the boy and the children of the story. But the settings are difficult for adults who sometimes can only guess: What did Roy observe when MIss Cooper picked a mushroom off a tree, put it into her mouth, but spit it out when he shouted during their game of hide and seek: "Can you eat the mushrooms off the trees?"
The previous editions of this novel, ISBN 096256210010 self published in 1989 and ISBN 158736008X were early and flawed. This text of the Third Edition is longer and error is reduced.
